The
research interests of Dr. S. P. Perlepes cover the synthesis, characterization
and reactions of transition - and lanthanide/actinide - metal complexes with
various oxygen- and nitrogen-based ligands. We are particularly interested in
the systematic investigation of the coordination chemistry of metal-corrosion
inhibitors, mainly of the benzotriazole type. Our interest in this chemistry
is two fold : (i) to generate well characterized complexes which could serve
as models for benzotriazolate surface complexes, and (ii) to investigate the
possibility of creating corrosion inhibitors more efficient than
benzotriazole. Two of the driving forces behind our interests in lanthanide
chemistry are : (i) the possibility of preparing dinuclear Ln(III) complexes
witch could be considered as the archetype of exchange-coupled systems, and
(ii) the use of lanthanide complexes for the synthesis of mixed-metal
Cu(II)-Ln(III) molecular clusters or infinite polymers; these compounds serve
as precursors and models for high- technology materials. We are also involved
in a project designed to develop methodology for the rational synthesis of
higher nuclearity 3d metal complexes and to study their magnetic properties
and reactivity.
