Green Chemistry in Greece

Academic Members of the Department of Chemistry in the University of Patras unanimously decided to adopt and promote Green Chemistry as a means of Sustainable Development through a Green Chemistry Group that was created. Following the above decision the Department of Chemistry in the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, the Department of Chemistry in the University of Ioannina and the Association of Greek Chemists were also established Green Chemistry Groups. All the above groups are in close collaboration and soon will launch the Greek Network of Green Chemistry.

The aims of the Patras Green Chemistry Group (PGCG) are to promote and practice Green Chemistry in:

  • Education
  • Research
  • Industry
  • Society

The PGCG will provide:

  • educational material for universities and schools to support teaching of Green Chemistry
  • training courses
  • conferences and seminars
  • newsletter
  • links to other organizations (university departments, institutes, government departments, industry, research councils, NGO, Green Chemistry Networks)

The PGCG has initiated the procedure for the launch of the Greek Network of Green Chemistry.

Green Chemistry is the utilization of a set of principles that reduces or eliminates the use or generation of hazardous substances in the design, manufacture and application of  chemical products”

Research areas with green concept in the Department of Chemistry: catalysis, polymers, biocatalysis, environmentally friendly insecticides.

Greening across the curriculum

In academic year 2003-2004 the greening of the curriculum in the Department of Chemistry will start based on a programme concerning reformation of the curriculum and which financially supported by the Ministry of Education through EPEAEK. It involves infusion of 12 principles of green chemistry, real-cases on green chemistry, microscale experiments, green chemistry experiments in the courses of organic chemistry, polymer chemistry, catalysis and biotechnology. A summer school on green chemistry will take place for undergraduate and postgraduate students.
